Family owned and operated, Thompson Excavating Inc. has been proudly serving Western Washington since 2015. While the name may be newer, our roots in the industry run deep.

Founder and President Rich Thompson has been in the dirt world since 1998. After completing the buyout of his former partner in 2015, he restructured and rebranded the company from CRS Enterprises to Thompson Excavating Inc. — honoring the family name and a proud legacy of hard work, integrity, and service.

Before going into business full time, Rich proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserve Seabees for 12 years, where he developed the discipline and work ethic that would later define his approach to construction and leadership. At the same time, he was raising four children — three of whom earned athletic scholarships to play at the collegiate level, something he considers one of his proudest accomplishments as a father.

• His oldest daughter, Bri, played Division 1 basketball at Portland State.

• His son JJ played Division 1 baseball at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

• His youngest, Matt, played NAIA baseball at Lewis-Clark State, winning a National Championship in 2017.

Rich gives all the credit to his kids for their commitment and drive, and today he’s a proud grandfather of 11 — known affectionately as “Pop” and embracing his role as the fun grandparent.

Rich was raised in the industry, learning the trade while working for his family’s company, Northlake Utilities Contractor, where his father “Big Rog” and uncles served the region for decades. That lineage continues today with Rich and his son, Matt Thompson, who now help lead the company side by side.

After his baseball career, Matt returned to join the family business, bringing with him the values of discipline, leadership, and teamwork that continue to shape Thompson Excavating’s culture and client relationships.
